Lockwood composed in all media throughout his career, including a great deal of chamber music. A Prelude for Woodwinds was written in 1925 while studying with Respighi. The work is scored for an octet consisting of piccolo, flute, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, and contrabassoon-unique in the chamber music or wind ensemble literature. The holograph score is in the Normand Lockwood Collection at the American Music Research Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
