Product Overview
This part song (in four vocal parts) is one of three Schubert composed in strophic form, in this case with four strophes (verses). The poem, by Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805), is a song to youthful love and the season in which it blooms. Schubert has set the poem freely in the manner of a romantic madrigal, complete with la-la-la refrain. Alfred Einstein (1880–1952) observed that Schubert’s parts songs are not composed for a large chorus “but for musically enlightened [singers] who are capable of doing justice to his modulations and enharmonic changes.” By this he means that the songs must be performed with careful attention to the textual nuances of each strophe.
