By Sarah Siegler
The “Turtle Dove” is a well-known English folksong that dates back to the 17th century. The haunting melody reflects the nature of the call of the turtledove, and the lyrics that speak of one who must leave his true love. In this arrangement, the cello begins the beautiful longing tune, and then it is passed to the full ensemble as the piece builds from piano to forte.
Fare thee well, my dear, I must be gone
And leave you for a while.
If I go away, I'll come back again
Though I go ten thousand miles, my dear,
Though I go ten thousand miles.
