Soul Food was created to enrich and feed the souls of both performer and audience, as they travel on a soul journey that ultimately leads to freedom and joy, while finding strength along the path.
The piece is a showcase for the bassoon with attractive melodies that are a pleasure to play.
A haunting melody starts the journey, developing into a warm and passionate outpouring, before softly returning to its haunting echo.
The second movement is electric, as a light staccato creeps alongside a fulsome melody, and motifs appear reminiscent of a toreador. In the middle, the bassoon builds tenderly and sensuously towards the climax.
The finale is pure joy and fun, adding more soulful tunes in between, and finishing the journey on a celebratory high note.
Each movement can also be played on its own, allowing versatility in programming.
