Johannes Brahms based the eighth of his organ preludes (WoO 122) on the famous fifteenth-century tune Es ist ein Ros', artfully concealing it within the figuration of the upper and middle voices. This arrangement disentangles the tune into a separate melodic line (for Unison mixed voices) against the choral prelude itself. Successful performance of the arrangement will maintain, but not stress, the rhythmic tension created when the pulses of the tune frequently fall on the off-beats of the chorale prelude.
