This composition, scored for full orchestra, was commissioned by the conductor in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Lakes Region Symphony Orchestra of Meredith, New Hampshire.
Legende, a tone poem, evokes the many moods of Lake Winnipesaukee, tracing a vivid arc from the tranquil stillness of pre-dawn, where life gently stirs and the water softly murmurs among bulrushes and lily pads, to the sudden onset of powerful summer storms that descend with little warning. As swiftly as these tempests arise, they yield to parting clouds, through which radiant shafts of light emerge, illuminating the lake once more as the sun sets in quiet brilliance.
