Product Overview

Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen was written in 1901 at Maiernigg, in the Austrian Lake District of Carinthia, where Mahler spent many summer vacations. He composed the work for voice and piano, later orchestrating it and assigning several poignant solo passages to the English Hom. In creating this performing edition for voice, English Horn, and piano, I have utilized Mahler's original piano accompaniment, giving the English Hom its solo lines from the orchestral score but also "borrowing" material from other orchestral instruments. I fell in love with this piece many years ago after hearing a recording of it sung by the incomparable Christa Ludwig accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic and Herbert von Karajan, and have always wondered why no one had prepared a version with English Hom and piano for recital use. This edition is dedicated to my talented friends, Patricia Thompson, Mezzo-Soprano; Nora Lewis, English Hom; and Amanda Arrington, Piano.
