By Robert Denham.
Patchworks is comprised of eight short character sketches, each one unique in its manner and flavor. Styles include tango, jazz, blues, cakewalk, and waltz, although all of these are portrayed in a 20th century setting. The variety described above is reflected in the work's title, which refers to a "mix and match" method of composition, almost like the sewn-together rags of a patchwork quilt. Each "rag" has a separate history and a separate context. The piece may be played as a set, or individual movements may be extracted at the performer's discretion. "We hold these truths" has been a particular favorite as an encore piece.
