COMPOSER'S NOTES
I have long been enamored of Brazilian music, and especially the music of A. C. Jobim. However, in this case, I didn’t sit down at the piano with the intention of writing a bossa nova; it's just what happened. It is also the longest melody I've ever written; forty-two measures to drop an octave and a half. The melody should sound suitably languorous over the quick little separated after-beats in the accompaniment. The subsequent development section of the piece should feel like improvised solos, played with considerable freedom.
