Composers Notes:
Western Serenade is a project that percolated for a few years. I started this piece with the intention of sending it to a composition competition as a student. I wrote the first 29 measures and left it to do another project; meanwhile the sketch sat in a pile. A few years until I met Karl Wentzel, who requested a piece for the same instrumentation to perform both for himself and his students. Upon getting this request, I dug out that sketch and wrote the rest of the piece behind it. I think it is a wonderful representation of where I started as a student and shows my progression as I’ve gotten better at my craft.
It begins with a soothing melody tossed back and forth between the soloists. After this the piece alternates between pastoral and dramatic moods and closes with an exciting and surprising presto coda.
