COMPOSER NOTES
I am always inspired by the wonderful works composed for clarinet and the combination of clarinet and horn. With this combination, I decided to compose the Two Pieces for Horn and Clarinet. This piece was premiered by Sandra Figueira, clarinet, and myself at a concert at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Milwaukee in the fall of 2006.
The first piece, Ballad, opens up with a rhythmic figure stated in clarinet and horn states a melody with the same rhythmic figure. A dialogue between horn and clarinet is stated with a modulation to E Major at the B Section. The Ballad itself is in A Major with interwoven melodies between clarinet and horn. Glissandos are stated in both clarinet and horn for different effects. The opening returns with a coda and ends softly inAMinor.
In the Scherzo movement, I was inspired by the Trio in A Minor for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano, Op.114. Scherzo opens up with a forward moving introduction in clarinet later stated by horn, which leads to an interplay of melodies between horn and clarinet in E Major. The B Section starts out with a melody stated by clarinet and then horn with a beautiful duet to end in AMajor. The opening theme returns to end strongly in AMinor.
