Composer's Notes:
If you have a ready-made ensemble, write for it! That was the idea behind my Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano when I played in a trio with that instrumentation. I had never heard of the Mozart Kegelstadt Trio or really, any work for this combination, until I played in this ensemble. In writing for this instrumentation, I discovered that there was much more for this particular combination than I had originally thought. I confess a highly neo-romantic sense in this piece, and the length sustains it. Every movement begins and ends in the same key.
