This piece is a little gem. It gives middle school directors something that is sorely missing in the repertoire for this age level...a good serious piece of literature. While lyrical and tuneful throughout, it provides all kinds of teaching tools. There are mild range extension in some sections, sections of thin texture, style shifts, and chromatics.
The first movement is a depiction of the first day of classes and even has the triangle play the role of the tardy bell at the beginning and end.
The second movement is a wonderful depiction of leaves falling to the ground in the fall, which you will really be able to hear in the opening line.
The last movement is a lyrical work song in a true march style.
