For Horn & Flute.

As a wonderful instrumental combination, flute and horn complement each other in many ways. Known for its fine delicacy, the flute has a wonderfully soft sound that everyone can enjoy. The Horn adds a background texture with its characteristically mellow tone which supports the tone of the flute. Theme and Variations on an Irish Melody serves as a fine example of how two different instruments support each other in ways no one can imagine.
Theme and Variations on an Irish Melody for flute and horn opens in A major. The principal melodic material is stated by the flute and then is followed in the horn. This material continues throughout the first and second variations. The third variation, in A minor, has solo lines for both instruments. The fourth variation returns to A major at a faster tempo. The theme returns in the Finale to a soft ending.
