For Saxophone Ensemble
By Maurice Ravel; arranged by Matthew Morris
Maurice Ravel composed Mother Goose (Ma mere l'oye) as a suite in five movements for piano four hands between 1908-10. In 1911, he orchestrated the suite. "The Enchanted Garden (Le Jardin feerique)," the final movement in the suite, is a beautiful, solemn work that starts slowly and builds to a rousing climax. The Fairy Garden depicts the awakening of the Sleeping Beauty by Prince Charming, in a hymn of great beauty, which works up to a joyous fanfare of celebration. Dawn. Birds are singing. Prince Charming enters, led by a cupid. He notices the sleeping Princess. She awakens at the same time. The Good Fairy appears and blesses the couple. The garden bursts into vivid bloom, and the ballet closes with the sound of wedding bells.
