Product Overview
In 2013, I had the pleasure of meeting Will Peebles, a terrific bassoonist with a passion for the small tenor bassoon known as the tenoroon. As one of my passions is writing beautiful works for instruments that have a limited repertoire, I enthusiastically accepted and began research into the instrument and its repertoire.
Upon finding almost no solo repertoire, I decided to be among the first to write a full sonata for the instrument. Instead of a traditional sonata, I decided to write a programmatic piece inspired by myths and legends throughout history.
The first movement “Pandora” is based on the Pandora's Box legend. The opening section describes a beautiful jar, which is then opened in the middle section.
The second movement, based on the character Medusa, slithers through chromaticism toward an unsuspecting victim before slithering away again.
The final movement “Jinn” is a lyrical representation of the release of a famous genie. Upon release, he causes a few problems, grants wishes, and is gone again.
Myths and Legends, a Sonata for Tenoroon and Piano (also intended as a student bassoon sonata in the study of tenor clef) was premiered by and is gratefully dedicated to Will Peebles.
