Jones's Music for Piano and Brass Quintet was composed in 1961 and is one of just a few pieces for that combination of instruments. There are many examples of sextets for woodwind quintet and piano, but composers have been reticent about exploring the potential of brass quintet and piano. Jones's experience as a pianist and a performing trumpeter enabled him to create a satisfying and enjoyable work.
A photocopy of the holograph score of Music for Piano and Brass Quintet is part of the Annapolis Brass Quintet Collection in the Library of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music.
