Product Overview

For Bassoon and Piano

By Eugene Cools. For Bassoon and Piano. This Concerstück is a single-movement work with some sections of contrasting tempo, meter, and thematic material. This work was the Paris Conservatory contest piece in 1910.

The Concertstiick, op. 80, is atypical of the Paris Conservatory contest pieces in that it does not follow the standard structure for many of those compositions. Normally they start with a slow bel canto section, followed by a cadenza which leads into the main body of the work, often cast as a sonata form or rondo. The Concertstiick, op. 80, begins with a tempo of Allegro moderate and basically retains that speed for the entire work and there is no cadenza or free a piacere passage. This piece has been unavailable to bassoonists for many years. Prairie Dawg Press is proud to reissue it in a new edition. Several obvious wrong notes have been corrected and measure numbers have been supplied to aid in the rehearsal process. I would like to thank Dr. Kristine Fletcher for providing me with a photocopy of the first edition of this piece.
