Martin J. Wimmer

Martin J. Wimmer began his public school music teaching career in 1988 and has taught in urban, suburban, and rural settings. Through the years he has taught all of the following at one time or another: General Music K-8, Chorus 4-12, Concert Band 4-12, Jazz Ensemble 9-12, Marching Band 7-12, and Music Appreciation at the college level. He has also directed several high school musicals, and has had students selected for All-County, Area All-State, and All-State ensembles. His high school band earned the highest rating of “Superior” at a recent Trills & Thrills Festival, and his middle school band achieved “Silver” at their first-ever NYSSMA Majors Festival last year.

Wimmer’s SATB choral work, Peace, won First Prize in the 2010 Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network Competition. It was also a finalist in the 2007 Ithaca College Competition, and has been performed by school, church, and community choruses across the USA and Canada, and has even been performed in Jordan and China.

His recent SA choral work, Through Music, published by Imagine Music Publishing, was selected for inclusion in the new 2018-2021 NYSSMA Manual as a recommended work for Level II choirs.

He holds degrees in music education and musicology from Syracuse University and SUNY Buffalo, respectively. He has also studied songwriting at SUNY Purchase, and earned a Jazz certificate at Berklee.
