As a student in college, I was asked to write music for a solo dancer and a solo oboe. While the dancer performed on the stage, the oboist walked around the auditorium playing the music.
Years later, I discovered my manuscript for this dance piece and decided to rework two of its themes for oboe and piano. The result was Two Pieces. The premiere of Two Pieces occurred on my mother's 90th birthday with my sister, Gwendolyn Carlton, playing the oboe, and Bret Gibbs playing the piano.
“Piece One” is dedicated to my sister, while “Piece Two” is dedicated to two very dear friends Sally Sparks and Kathy Callas. Both pieces are very lyrical and should be played with leisure.
