Stephen Brown was born in NewYork City, grew up in a small town in Illinois, and went to Harvard on a Leonard Bernstein scholarship. Finding the music department there a little stuffy, he switched concentrations to something more practical -- art history. He came back to the small town in Illinois, got his Master's, ended up as a music professor without ever really intending to, and stayed with that best of all jobs for over three decades. He has never stopped playing, composing, and writing about music in a variety of genres.
